What is OpenCut?

Best for: creators who want a free, open-source video editor and are willing to work with a project in transition.

OpenCut is a free and open-source video editor for web, desktop and mobile, positioned as an alternative to CapCut. It is MIT licensed, which means no watermarks, no subscription and no restrictions on commercial use of what you produce.

What makes it interesting: the roadmap is ambitious and unusually specific. The rewrite targets a Rust core serving desktop, mobile and browser from one codebase, an Editor API, first-class third-party plugins via a plugin-first architecture, an MCP server so AI agents can drive it, headless mode for automation and batch rendering, and a scripting tab inside the editor.

Where it falls short: OpenCut is being rewritten from the ground up right now, so the version described above is largely not shipped yet. For actual editing work today you want opencut-classic, the previous version, which is what opencut.app still runs. Judge it on what exists rather than the roadmap, and expect churn until the rewrite lands.

Details: TypeScript moving to a Rust core, MIT licensed.
